Moroccan culture has been influenced by many people and places. It is a mixture of the Islamic tradition of Arabs, European colonizers of the past as well a mixture of African tribes. In architecture the most prominent influence is of Islam. Construction of buildings as well as their interior and exterior design features have been formed on the basis of Islamic guidelines for many centuries. In addition to this, Hispano-Moorish architecture has also impacted the elements of design in Morocco. This was influenced by people of North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. Design elements include geometric patterns, Islamic calligraphy of the Quran, Zellige Peninsula. Design elements include geometric patterns, Islamic calligraphy of the Quran, Zellige mosaic tiling. Open courtyards with lush gardens are generally found at the center of buildings for rest and relaxation. Moroccan architecture incorporates white walls and stucco roofs, arches and domes.
